Typical lager taps are supplemented by a good, compact selection of Lithuanian craft beers which is by no means standard or guaranteed around Kaunas let alone for late night rock bars.

Basement lounge bar with access off a side-street. Looks unpromising but the impression on arrival is low-key rather than dingy or unpleasant. There’s basic comfortable lounge space with curved plastered vaulted ceiling a lowered seating area to the left of a long bar room. Fairly plainly furnished.

A friendly hangout with a sense of ‘reliable bolthole’ to it. Somewhere you can get chatting to others easily.

Description:
Set just off the deathtrap that is Birštono gatve, where city officials decided a long, wide flat strip of road would be a sensible thing to build through the key intersection between downtown and old town Kaunas. Yes, they have built an underpass, but if you miss that, don’t fancy an underpass at 2am or fancy being lazy and taking a shortcut, watch out for joyriders going through there at 100+ MPH. No joke.

Galera is a throwback to the 1990s era, post-Independence where the generations hung out in such low-key, communal, down to earth venues.

A longstanding basement rock club with soundtrack to match, but on entry you’ll actually find it quite comfortable and lounge-like, not especially arch or over-layered in gothic (it’s doubtful they’d have the money to anyway).

A super reliable late bar where you can easily get chatting to locals.

As well as the typical lager taps they offer a decent range of Lithuanian craft to choose from. No outright bargains but it’s pretty fairly priced here.

Let your hair down, meet some new people, take it easy. That’s what late bars should be about, right?
