Venue Type: Dockworker’s Café / Historic Lowlands Eetcafé

Choice/Quality of Drinks:
❤️❤️❤️
Simple tap options targeted at nearby workers, so De Koninck and basic lagers, with a perfunctory selection of classic bottles for pickier customers.

Style/Décor:
❤️❤️❤️❤️
A huge black hut with the name printed in large letters makes quite an impression as you emerge from the retail park. Shipping containers and a more modern hipster courtyard do not give much of a clue to the interior. Head inside to find a large long Eetcafé with high ceilings and preserved decor, from the cream walls, to the grooved worn away bench seating to the tiled floor. A bar opposite is busy with kitchen orders and bills.

Atmosphere/Character:
❤️❤️❤️❤️
A busy, bustling atmosphere inside as the kitchen delivers multiple food orders with lightning speed. Service is occasionally hurried but still scrupulously pleasant and polite. A democratic place with a range of people from mucky dockworkers in their overalls to young families.

Amenities/Events:
❤️❤️❤️
Outdoor seating, meals

Value For Money:
❤️❤️❤️❤️
Good value versus the city centre, especially for the food portions which are enormous.

Description:
One of the last surviving dockworker’s kitchen Eetcafés. Closed at weekends and closes at 8pm on weekdays. Loyal, committed ownership and following. Hearty food, democratic prices and cheap good beer. It’s an adventure to find, with a tram and a walk through an industrial estate, you emerge by wind turbines and a busy through road to find this large black hut, containing the preserved century old interior and all the warmth and welcome you are praying awaits you inside. Meals are hearty and enormous, service is busy but unfailingly polite and pleasant, the atmosphere is matter of fact, that is to say unpretentious and without artifice or conceit, while not being especially cliquey, arch or off-putting. A genuine achievement. With a new cult following supplementing the local workers, its future looks secure. Really, really worth the trip out.
