A unique layout, on the square opposite the cathedral, you appear to stoop inside before being met with a higgledy-piggledy cavern with brick vaults. Mezzanine area to the left which looks at best semi-legal, a curved bar to the right, and small raised area to the rear. On busy nights the steps become seats as the place is bursting to capacity.

Supremely atmospheric place with the ad hoc gallery/mezzanine and people sat on the steps by the bar giving it a true bunker feel. The loyalty and love is palpable.

Description:
With a name like this in a place like Rijeka, minor warning signs would normally be flashing that it’s another trashy Irish pub. The exterior signage with Guinness logo does nothing to dispel that either.

However the business started, it is so much more than any theme pub today.

A unique layout, on the square opposite the cathedral, you appear to stoop inside before being met with a higgledy-piggledy cavern with brick vaults. Mezzanine area to the left which looks at best semi-legal, a curved bar to the right, and small raised area to the rear. On busy nights the steps become seats as the place is bursting to capacity.

Decorated with local artwork rather than Irish tat (which is present but doesn’t dominate), heritage photographs and a sense of worn-in fixture to the place.

This would all be extremely positive, with the atmosphere on the evenings as vibrant as you can find in Europe (yes, this is not an exaggeration), but a further string to its bow is the terrific selection of beers covering Croatian craft and superior European classics.

Be warned that like most Croatian bars it is a smokey den – there is really no way around it other than arriving early and hoping for the best.

It feels like the kind of bar that should be open until the early mornings 5 nights a week but do bear in mind the midnight closing and don’t get caught out.

It doesn’t need to go as far, but it does, and that’s what makes it stick out way above the rest.
