Description:
Situated 100 metres from the Cathedral to its east, while to the west, 100 metres from the bullring. Extremely central therefore, yet there is nonetheless an unusual backstreet, low key feel as you approach Casa Matias.

This bar, famous for its Flamenco and live guitar improvised on a tiny ‘stage’ in its backroom is no hidden gem, but it is part of the loved institutions of the old town, and an escape from the typical tapas formats.

Instead, sherries and wine seem more sensible in a space where you can be cheek by jowl with other customers enjoying the show and a piece of history carried through to the present – unvarnished! Yes, don’t expect pristine aluminium bar tops here.

Family-run and you can expect their rules to apply here – be respectful and don’t mind any banter. Don’t expect to march in here with a pram and an entourage of children.

Instead, try and time your visit to be immersed by the ‘duende’ as it is known – a heightened spirit, a state of atmosphere where an audience is rapt by proceedings and the world outside feels but an irrelevance.

That’s how good this bar can be at its best.
