| Choice/ Quality of Drinks | ❤️❤️❤️❤️ A typical ‘Grand Café’ type drinks selection, erring towards the mainstream but with some quirkier and unusual options. |
| Style/ Décor | ❤️❤️❤️❤️ A café dating from 1930, decorated with kitsch, portraits and fitted with work from the belle epoque – stained glass window, stylised motifs with natural themes. Art Deco makes an appearance in the fixtures and fittings but those elegant lines and curves cannot temper the electicism of the space as a whole. Outside covered terrace with an interior set around a curved bar. Classic reds and golds in the fixtures and furnishings. |
| Atmosphere/ Character | ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Grand café interior is characterful enough, added to with the rhythms of service – wisecracking smartly dresser waiters, and a broad audience reflecting a versatile venue. Brightly lit, and could perhaps benefit from shadier corners in the evening. |
| Amenities/ Events | ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Food, snacks, outdoor seating, newspapers, TV |
| Value For Money | ❤️❤️❤️ Typical city centre pricing, certainly not cheap. |
| Description | Upon arriving in a French city, one of the venues you hope to find is a historic café or brasserie, something patrician with smart waiters, leather bench seating, and style from the belle époque, nouveau + Deco to enjoy. Lamp lights, gold trim, stained glass. All this and more can be found at du Palais, which adds to that with a curious kitsch eclecticism. A typical brasserie menu is on offer, made interesting with a few non-standard flourishes, and the environment is how you’d expect – wise-cracking servers floating to and fro balancing plates of drinks. The lighting could perhaps be dimmed later in the evening (starkly lit venues do feel unwelcome in the later hours in my view), but aside that, there’s a lot to look at soak up and enjoy about this lovely old cafe, a Reims institution that should not be missed.
