Description:
Ypres’ nearest thing to a brown café, Boerenhol (bunker) is a quirky place. Certain days a week their basement opens which houses a museum to life in the trenches, and the typical World War I decorations sit amongst more cheerful sports scarves and emblems in the pub itself, which opens out at the back into an atrium with more of a casual, off-beat common room style. So there’s a bit of a mish-mash here.
The place receives a few iffy reviews on account of being cash only and a limited menu not displaying pricing – we found the price of beers not outrageous, nor especially cheap – but this is something to watch out for as it really seems to have annoyed some.
In conjunction with their little museum it seems fair enough and service was pleasant while we were pleasant to them.
The beer selection is fairly stripped back but you’ll find a couple of interesting bottles.
Visiting in summer was perhaps not ideal for a place of this sort and we can imagine it taking on a lot more character and cosiness in the colder months. Definitely worth noting to visit in Ypres given a fairly small selection of superior options.
