| Choice/ Quality of Drinks | ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Reputed Madeira and wines |
| Style/ Décor | ❤️❤️❤️❤️ A complex to explore with barrels stored in the roof to aid evaporation, and a series of tasting rooms downstairs. Blackened beams, exposed stone, frescos and large shelves of old bottles create a characterful, if well-financed scene. The most character room is arguably the Fresqueira vintage room. |
| Atmosphere/ Character | ❤️❤️❤️ An island institution and big name with throngs of tour groups and visitors. Not a place with many regulars, as such. |
| Amenities/ Events | ❤️❤️❤️ Restaurant, gift shop, tours, outdoor seating, snacks |
| Value For Money | ❤️❤️❤️ Undeniably premium prices but corresponding to the quality. |
| Description | You couldn’t take a trip to Madeira without visiting a wine lodge. Well, you could, but you’d be missing out on part of the island’s unique cultural heritage! According to Blandy’s website, their premises have a unique micro-climate due to its solar exposure, brick roofs, thick stone walls and wooden floor. Though this is merely referring to how the wine ages, we would agree with them that each one of the Lodge’s rooms has its own character too. The eastern warehouse holds wine dating back to 1920 and the family’s private vintage collection is held within thick stone walls. Due to the differing temperatures and humidity, their Madeira wines all have differing ageing profiles based on their location. You can take a tour or even just wander around the premises with various tasting parlours, which have kept their character well. A central courtyard provides a distinctive identity. While you will not find many regulars, there is nevertheless much to get stuck into at this storied complex of character and distinction.(added 2023) |
