Description:
On our first visit to Bruges we were naïve youngsters navigating the well-trodden path of those who’d watched In Bruges and couldn’t wait to visit. In the decades since that sparkle of magic has never really died, the city uniquely capable of still astounding you – a new angle, a new spire, a new feature you had blithely walked past. But the consequence of In Bruges success was mass tourism on a level even an already touristy city had never seen or accommodated before. On our budget, a hostel was already not cheap. Joining up at different sides of the city we had a late drink at St Christopher’s, the hostel that adjoins this pub. The strength of the Belgian ale working its magic, it remains a very hazy memory, but a memory nonetheless.
A return to this venue 13 years later was a curious one because I’d not deemed it likely to be guide worthy, yet came away convinced enough it ought to be.
One one side, you have a loungey, pubby downstairs venue that nonetheless at times feels like an overflow area or common room for hostel users, but on the other a narrow characterful bar for all-comers to drop in and enjoy.
Yes, the off-beat theme continues in here too with a coffin doubling as a table top and vegan pizza on sale for an almost concerningly reasonable price.
The beer selection is at least adequate for most purposes and it’s somewhere you can hangout in Bruges that has a little more energy later in the evening too. Time your visit carefully depending on how much you want to expose yourself to – an afternoon or early evening visit did us fine.
It’s at least one to keep in your back pocket if the inevitable summer closures or erratic one-man shows elsewhere in the city leave you arriving at a closed door – this place has that facility and in Europe convenience is sometimes worth its weight in gold.
