Description:
Antwerp’s revitalised ‘old docks’ are perhaps the poster boy for post-industrial renewal, as well as a stereotypical example of what can go right and what can go wrong. In the negative column, some long standing businesses lose their clientele and either change or close, rent prices skyrocket and chains move in. In the plus side, the area is cleaner and safer, space used imaginatively and well-connected to the city centre.
Bar Paniek is a big tick in the plus column, a warehouse converted to a bar, but one that appears to have left half of its belongings behind – nautical nik-naks, shipyard and mechanics all in one.
As you approach it looks like most other converted warehouse bars in a docklands with a large busy patio, but the intriguing aspects are actually inside.
Decorated with tall plants with seating across the forecourt and a raised area behind the bar, you are surrounded by old knackered tables, bric-a-brac, antiques and so on, but in a more ‘real’ way than the typical Belgian ensemble.
The drinks selection is quality over quantity here – if stripped back, at least modern and covering bases. You can enjoy a game of billiards, sit out on the terrace and enjoy a calendar of social events here at a venue that appears to go from strength to strength.
Don’t be put off by its supposed distance from the old town either – a tram stop around the back deposits you back in town in 10 minutes.
