Choice/Quality of Drinks ❤️
Only bottled beers – basic at that. Some spirits and liqueurs too.
Style/Décor ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
A surviving shack, relic from the PRL days with old counter and menu with daily items scrawled on. Basic seating that is nevertheless warmly lit and welcoming.
Atmosphere/Character ❤️❤️❤️❤️
An experience you won’t find easily these days as the old working class venues die out. Still well-used by local workers knocking off their shifts and a social space of sorts.
Amenities/Events ❤️❤️❤️
Hot meals, groceries, snacks
Value For Money ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Scrupulously good value for money.
Description
The Gdansk shipyard is emblematic of working culture not only in Europe but worldwide, the epicentre of the solidarity movement. A working class remnant of that era, this relic from a bygone era allows a peek into what life was like. The experience becomes even more realistic when the shipworkers arrive with their muddy boots and high vis jackets! A one-room shack with unchanged counter, bottle opener attached to a chain, old sign in/savings book shelf and handwritten menu gives a flavour of what to expect. Is it a pub or bar? Well, everyone will have their views, but here you can come to socialise and yes, drink, in a casual environment. Scrupulously honest, the staff will look you in the eye as you are one of them, even as a tourist. It isn’t somewhere you would choose for a night out but neither are many venues. One for the purists, historians and curious, intrepid explorers to get stuck into. (Added December 2023)
