Description:
As you head east from the old town the Caños de Carmona signals your departure from the old city. This fragment of Roman aqueduct looks one the face of its like a fine preserved fragment of ancient history until you discover that entire kilometres of functional Roman aqueduct were dynamited in 1912 to make way for urban building, one of the cities biggest disgraces crimes. You’ll have just enough time to dwell on that before arriving at the shopfront of colourful Bar Jota.

Jota is a distinctive drop-in bar, little more than a taproom, a Spanish equivalent of an old fashioned Knajpa, and the sort that doesn’t acquire throngs of tourists but thirsty locals.

The proprietor/tapster is the master of his art and everything is dealt with directly with the utmost efficiency. You can’t turn Cruzcampo into a great beer but, by God, few places are committed to trying as much as Jota.

You can order the beer in a range of different sizes and they keep a fair price which is listed behind the bar in numerous permutations.

Established in 1936, like many Seville bars the evidence of its heritage and that of the city is plastered over the wall – festivals, historic buildings and yes, bullfighting which was live on TV on our visit (take that information at your discretion).

It is no dusty relic but a relevant day-to-day bar that has traces of its history from its inception, to 70s and 80s heyday to the neighbourly nature you’ll find on your visit. It’s a piece of social history and a fun, interesting visit so long as you aren’t too intimidated congregating with the locals.
