| Choice/ Quality of Drinks | ❤️❤️❤️❤️ Augustiner Helles, Edelstoff and Dunkel on tap with the wooden barrel stuff being tapped later in the day. A shame they couldn’t do it all day every day like Cologne’s beer halls really. |
| Style/ Décor | ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ A monumentally impressive large beer hall some of which dates back 200 years, with cavernous entrance with low-slung anterooms, giant tables and blackened fixtures complimented with warm wooden hues. A huge Schäfflerwagenkranz, ceiling lamp catches the eye as you walk nearer to the tap. This drama extends to art nouveau arcades and fittings in the beer garden, along with other areas such as the ‘Seashell’, ‘White Hall’. It really is one of those rare venues that astonishes. |
| Atmosphere/ Character | ❤️❤️❤️ The huge space means there is nearly always an available table. A giant operation in which you are invited to be surrounded by social merriment. On the downside, the size and the fact you can only be in one place at any time means a singular visit can never quite allow you to absorb each facet of this huge complex. |
| Amenities/ Events | ❤️❤️❤️ Meals, snacks, garden, outdoor seating, library, shop |
| Value For Money | ❤️❤️❤️ Not as good value as the Braustuberl itself west of the city centre, but nothing that will break the bank. A half litre of beer in such an establishment in such a city priced at under 4 euros in 2023 is pretty good. |
| Description | An astonishing venue that will take several visits to truly explore and get a picture of. From its cavernous interior to the arcades and Art Nouveau fittings of the gardens and anterooms, this 200 year old venue is unmissable for those who are seeking the beer hall experience, and have an eye for the aesthetic. Augustiner beer is pretty good too of course, and if the price of admission is a half litre, that’s well worth paying. Be sure to explore in order to find your preferred place. The typical tourist caveats apply – service can be slow, food can be average and sometimes the experience can feel a bit churny and too family-oriented, but those are pitfalls all such venues struggle to deal with. We recommend going for a beer and to socialise. As a venue it can’t be overlooked. (Added August 2023) |
