Choice/Quality of Drinks: ❤️❤️❤️❤️
A dozen plus barrels of fortified wine from the familiar (Vermut, Pedro Ximenez) to the not so familiar (Pajarete, Malaga Cream) with basic alternatives (bottled lager). It’s all about the fortified wine really.
Style/Décor: ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Historic and preserved, one long room with sets of large barrels behind the bar, a wooden counter and tiled interior. A small kiosk for offsales near one entrance.
Atmosphere/Character: ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
A local institution with all that entails. Service has a rhythm and ritual with bills written in chalk on the counter and bells frequently ringing for changes of shift and barrels. Standing room along a natural social space works brilliantly.
Amenities/Events: ❤️❤️❤️
Limited tapas dishes and finger food, off-sales.
Value For Money: ❤️❤️❤️
Good value for money albeit smaller servings.
Description:
A historic local institution that will appear in every guide book, for good reason, as you will not find a venue quite like it. Well-worn and characterful, this long room, a former police guard office with two entrances was converted and is effectively a tasting room for various fortified wines in huge barrels along the wall. Bills are drawn up in chalk on a wooden counter and people gather around to drink and chat. While there is a tourist trade, in the off season this is very well balanced with local life too. The service has a tradition and rhythm with smart shirts and bell rings adding to the feeling of ceremony. A couple of vermouths will set you back a few euros at most. A must visit.
