Description:
Among Riga’s most longstanding beer specialists, Alus Celle is set just off one of central Riga’s most grand intersections around St Gertrude’s church.

It’s a half-step basement bar and bottle shop with the bottle offerings to the left of the entrance and bar fitting jutting out of the centre.

To the right you’ll find a half-constructed Belgian-inspired bar area with typical seating of that style and beer signage as décor. It just about hangs together but a little grey in places.

Beers remain highly specialised and quite expensive too, even when compared to other competitors around the city, but quality is emphasised here.

The owner’s service could be euphemistically called straightforward to first time visitors but there is evidence he thaws out for people he knows better.

A great beer in the ‘Belgian’ section of the room is an enjoyable way to spend time, but limited opening hours restrain the potential for atmosphere to develop.

As such, the bar sneaks onto our guide with a few reservations attached.
