Location: Allegade 4, 2000 Frederiksberg, Copenhagen
Venue Type: Brunt Vaertshus / Traditional Pub
Year of Inscription: 2024
EBG Rating: 7.7/10
Choice/Quality of Drinks:
❤️❤️❤️
Basic Tuborg/Carlsberg options with Danish schnapps and a couple of other different – but unexciting options.
Style/Décor:
❤️❤️❤️❤️
A larger venue than the typical brown pub. Large front law leading to conservatory area (ignore that) and pub inside, with a lounge and slim bar at the back. Reds and browns, very worn in, and almost worn out.
Atmosphere/Character:
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Oozing character and memory (and more besides, we’d bet…), here is a 100 year old pub that speaks to you even when only a few people are present. Later on it becomes the scene of merriment as a communal piano is the centre of early morning singalongs.
Amenities/Events:
❤️❤️❤️
Live music, snacks, outdoor seating, smoking permitted.
Value For Money:
❤️❤️❤️
Reasonable value overall, not unusual, and some fair options to be found.
Description:
Nicknamed ‘The Psychopath’, Alléenberg’s reputation as a sleazy late night dive may not be immediately apparent as you pass through a quaint gate through a large garden, the sort you don’t normally see around Copenhagen, but which line Pile Allé in the town (don’t say district) of Frederiksberg. Everything looks reasonably restrained, with a small outdoor bar and conservatory area leading to a lounge café. This is so typical of the many faces of Copenhagen nightlife.
As the evening develops, the place becomes ever rowdier, culminating in late music performances. An interior which matches the Brunt Vaertshus (Brown Pub) aesthetic – browns and reds with brewery signage and old nik-naks is the appropriate setting for that sort of debauchery. That plus the permitted smoking tends to hustle customers quickly into the love/hate camps, as its online reviews confirm, but there is no doubt that an evening here, in a 100 year old bar is an educational, and often fun exposure to Danish nightlife.
