DescriptionAnother of central Brussels impasse pubs, I must have walked past the entrance a dozen times before ever going down there, but such is the wealth of good pub going to be found down these things that I am at risk of associating back alleys as places where only good things can be found at the end of them.

A La Becasse is definitely an old fashioned pub, with wood paneled walls, some great period features like candelabras, and a Victorian era staircase down to the toilets.

The pub serves blends of Lambic from the barrel, something you will struggle to find anywhere. The standard blend Lambic doux, is a really beautiful blend of sweet and ever so slightly sour beer. Similarly, they do blends of Gueue and Kriek which are worth a try. These are served in a glazed ceramic jug which you then dispense into small beakers. This gives the impression of drinking more than perhaps you actually have.

There is a decent range of beer covering most of the usual Belgian styles from good breweries, meaning you can happily sit around and enjoy a quality beer in some impressively stately surroundings.

The place also sees custom from adventurous couples seeking a secluded drink down the rabbit hole and away from the crowds.

It can take a while to get busy, even given the central location, but when busy A La Becasse transforms into a genuinely heartwarming lively, social and characterful venue, though you do need it to be at least three-quarters full in order to foster that great communal hubbub.
