Description:
Vagonu on the corner of Vagonu and Lienes iela is among a series of ex-industrial areas around Riga that have been turned into cultural centres with art galleries, workships, live music venues, bars and restaurants. Among these is Nurme’s brewery and taproom, with a stage on the top floor, but explore further into the complex as the space opens out.

To your right you will see another bar – it’s this one, – 1983.

Repurposed industrial space which will be clear on entry from the high ceilings, exposed brick and large windows out onto the courtyard.

The decorations is deliberately broad brush making use of the space. You’ll find a wide bar to the right of the entrance. This houses some interesting drinks, not just the Pilsner Urquell in good condition on tap, but Franconian and other Bavarian lagers in the fridge – several from brands you don’t often encounter.

There is of course a well-stocked back bar.

With a young post-grad type audience there is a good tempo and a style to the venue which should be visited in the evenings to make the most of the space, though be aware they also host gigs from time to time too. Late openings on Fridays and Saturdays are convenient, and it’s a short walk to the bus stop to get back into town, so don’t be so timid, make the effort to get out here and enjoy it.
